Stockton police released body-worn camera footage Friday showing officers shooting and killing a 19-year-old during a foot pursuit after they approached a double-parked vehicle. The video captures the moments that led to the shooting on Sept. 9 near Doray Court and has prompted renewed questions from neighbors and the victim’s family. Police say the man was taken to a hospital and later died, as reported by CBS Sacramento.
Video release follows department statement
The Stockton Police Department shared the footage on Oct. 24 and said officers were conducting a "proactive vehicle checkout" when they approached the car, according to CBS Sacramento. The department says the man, later identified as 19-year-old Rocco Robinson, stood up from the vehicle, ignored commands, struggled with officers and then fled; during the chase he dropped an extended magazine and a loaded handgun, per the release.
Bodycam shows struggle, a chase and multiple rounds
The clip includes audio of officers ordering the man to stop and footage of a chaotic foot pursuit; KCRA reports that at least 14 shots can be heard and that some rounds appear to have been fired after the suspect had fallen to the ground. Police say two officers fired their weapons when the suspect moved to pick up the gun, and they rendered aid at the scene before he was transported to a hospital.
Weapons and scene evidence
Authorities said they recovered an unserialized "ghost" gun and a fully loaded 17‑round magazine near the man, and that additional high‑capacity magazines were found in the vehicle, according to CBS Sacramento. The department also said the officers involved were placed on administrative leave while the shooting is reviewed.
Officers identified and investigators notified
Stockton police identified the officers as Ruben Rillon and Kyle Ribera and said the case is under a multi‑agency review that includes the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation, the California Department of Justice and the county medical examiner's office, KCRA reported. Those agencies will examine claims and evidence before any prosecutorial decisions are made.
Family and neighbors demand answers
Family members created a memorial at the scene and have pressed city officials for records and accountability; organizers say they will hold a press conference at City Hall to demand the release of all reports and footage, according to Davis Vanguard. Neighbors told reporters they heard dozens of shots and that the encounter has left the block shaken and seeking answers.
What to watch for next
The DA’s bureau and state investigators will complete their review before any public findings or charges are announced, and Stockton’s internal processes could run in parallel. Meanwhile, the newly released footage is likely to shape local debate over use of force, ghost‑gun proliferation and police transparency as officials collect witness statements and forensic evidence, as per Davis Vanguard.
