Commuters in Central Florida can look forward to expanded train services as SunRail announces it will extend its weekday operations into the evening hours starting this December. With the addition of two new trains, one southbound evening train and one northbound mid-evening train, late stays at the office or nights out in the city are about to get a bit easier. "The new late-night trains provide more options for those staying later at work or enjoying Central Florida's dining, entertainment, and community events, making it easier to ride, relax, and return home safely," said SunRail, ClickOrlando reported.
Set to begin on December 1, and apart from the extension of service times, minor adjustments to the existing schedule will be made, most of which will be by just one to two minutes. SunRail aims to make nighttime commuting more efficient for its users, and details of the updated schedule, including all new service times, can be easily found online at SunRail's official website, WFTV shared.
The possible further expansion of services to include weekends was also discussed. However, the financial implications are significant. The estimated annual operating cost for trains on both Saturdays and Sundays is $26,265,000. Furthermore, weekend services would necessitate the employment of an entirely new crew along with the procurement of additional equipment. To run trains on the weekend, SunRail would need three more locomotives and cab cars, representing a substantial investment of $ 61.8 million, with leasing options available as a potentially cheaper, yet recurring, cost.
Despite the costs, the service extension marks a considerable improvement in the region's public transport offerings, hinting at the potential growth of SunRail's connectivity and presence in the lives of Central Florida's citizens. For those interested in the finer points of SunRail's extended service or any forthcoming developments, SunRail encourages riders and the general public to visit its website and to follow its social media channels for real-time updates.
