Surprise, Arizona is upping its public art game with the unveiling of two new installations at Surprise Stadium, meant to thrill baseball fans and art aficionados alike. Attendees can look forward to the creativity on display at the ribbon cutting event slated for October 30 at 5 p.m., just outside the stadium's third base gate. These installations are not just a nod to America's favorite pastime, but also to the city's agricultural history.
The first piece, aptly named "Bounce," you can find it outside the first base gate. It captures the essence of a baseball mid-air, with its curving steel form interwoven with a cotton pattern that honors the region's farming past. On the flip side, and close to the third base gate is "Swing," a sculpture that harnesses the dynamics of a batter's motion using over 200 actual baseball bats to stunning effect, as per the City of Surprise. These sculptures were not just brainstormed but brought to life with the collaboration of RSP Architects, Southwest Fabrication, and Bollinger Atelier, all based within the state of Arizona.
Not only are these artsy additions meant to elevate the visual appeal of public spaces, but they also fall in line with the City of Surprise's dedication to integrating art into the community fabric. This commitment is affirmed by city regulations which allocate a portion of capital improvement budgets – precisely one and one-third percent – toward enhancing the local art scene through the City’s Municipal Art Fund.
