Hillsborough County is pushing the boundaries on inclusivity yet again, now with wheels firmly on the basketball court. This Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Junior Strong Dogs, a brand new wheelchair basketball team for athletes under 18, will be hosting tryouts. It's all happening at the Lesley "Les" Miller, Jr. All People's Community Park & Life Center, located at 6105 E. Sligh Ave., Tampa, FL 33617.
Sports enthusiasts of varying experience levels are called to show their mettle, particularly those within an age range of 5 to 17 years old. In a statement obtained by Hillsborough County's news release, the event emphasizes that all youths with physical disabilities are welcome and encouraged to join. And for those wondering about the cost? Worry not, this event is completely free, and you don't have to bother with pre-registration.
This move by Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation is not just a one-off event — it signifies a larger commitment to adaptive sports, which have been proven to support health, independence, and personal growth. The adult version of the team, the Strong Dogs, has long been a part of the community.
Their commitment to such initiatives has produced a wide range of adaptive sports opportunities. According to what Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation details on their website, these programs are designed to "promote health, independence, and personal growth" for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges.
