In an effort to address the critical shortage of skilled fleet technicians, Tampa has joined forces with Hillsborough Community College to introduce the GEAR UP program, a fresh initiative promising to deliver certified, job-ready fleet technicians. This collaborative venture promises practical, paid training while students complete their education at HCC, providing a dual benefit of learning and earning.
As per the details released by Tampa's official news, the City of Tampa is picking up the tab for tuition and training under GEAR UP, while the participants work at the City's Fleet Maintenance Division. In an interesting rollout, the three students spearheading the program - Christopher Figuereo, Michael Daniels, and Maurice Daniels - were selected for their outstanding performance and potential as identified by their HCC instructors.
Mayor Jane Castor has high hopes for the program, seeing it as a stepping stone towards realizing her Transforming Tampa's Tomorrow (T3) vision. "Programs like GEAR UP show what’s possible when we invest in people who are already part of our community," Mayor Castor said. Her vision sees these technicians as the linchpin ensuring the city’s patrol cars, fire trucks, and service vehicles are maintained in top condition, vital for the day-to-day operations serving the residents of Tampa.
The creation of GEAR UP is seen as a strategic move to combat the national and Floridian mechanic drought, aimed to propel local students into stable, skilled careers. Providing reliable service for Tampa's essential vehicle fleet stands at the program's core. Apart from training, the selected students for the program have an opportunity to leave an imprint on city operations with their skills, adding value to the community at large.
Interested media outlets are accorded an opportunity to delve deeper into the initiative and converse with the program's pioneer students. Those wishing to cover the program are obliged to send their attendance confirmations to [email protected] in advance.
