The City of Tampa's Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) recently secured a collection of accolades at the 43rd Annual Planning & Design Awards, hosted by The Planning Commission. Recognized for enhancing the city’s quality of life, the CRA was on the receiving end of four awards, spotlighting efforts in revitalization and historic preservation. Among the celebrated projects were the Kid Mason Community Center renovations, The Skills Center, the Historic 7th Avenue Bricking Project, and improvements to the Tampa Union Station.
At the core of the recognition was the Kid Mason Community Center in Downtown Tampa, which was transformed to support youth activities and provide a communal space for the Central Park neighborhood. Backing this endeavor, the CRA aimed to firmly establish a platform for the city's youth, aiming to simultaneously honor and capitalize on the area’s rich historical depth. "These awards are a reflection of our continued commitment," said CRA Director Cedric McCray in a statement obtained by Tampa's official website, emphasizing the agency's drive "to create thriving, equitable, and vibrant communities across Tampa."
East Tampa's CRA also garnered attention with The Skills Center, which bagged a Planning & Design Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community under the Investment Category. By providing educational and leadership opportunities to the community’s younger members, The Skills Center aims to potentiate personal and communal advancement, setting a precedent for long-term investment in the area's human capital.
Ybor City's CRA brought back to life the areas' historical ambiance through the Historic 7th Avenue Bricking Project. This effort meticulously restored Ybor City's traditional brick streets, a nod to the neighborhood's signature aesthetics. Ensuring to carefully balance preservation with progress, the improvements not just retained, but actively enriched the architectural heritage for its residents and visitors. Similarly, Downtown Tampa's Union Station saw significant enhancements in a project done in partnership with the Friends of Tampa Union Station. Enhancements focused on the central lobby area, to poisedly refresh an iconic transit hub without stripping its storied past.
Such initiatives, as heralded by The Planning Commission, act as benchmarks for enduring, thoughtful urban development. The acknowledgment by the Planning & Design Awards articulates the CRA’s success in fostering spaces that do not merely exist in the city’s landscape, but interact with and enhance the lives entwined with Tampa’s evolving cityscape.
