As burn permit season begins in Tennessee, residents are reminded that permits are required for outdoor burning starting on Wednesday. According to Sevier County Fire & Rescue's Facebook post, permits are issued by the Tennessee Division of Forestry and are required through May 15 to ensure safe burning practices.
Permits are granted only when conditions are safe, with factors such as wind and drought taken into account. When conditions are unsafe, permit issuance will be temporarily suspended. Permits can be obtained online daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and must be secured on the same day the burning is planned. All fires must be fully extinguished before the end of the day. Burning without a permit is a Class C misdemeanor, and fires must not be left unattended.
Residents without internet access can apply by calling 877-350-BURN (2876) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Those within city limits should verify local regulations before burning.
Burning household trash is prohibited and should be disposed of at designated convenience centers. The Tennessee Division of Forestry urges residents to follow these guidelines to maintain safety during the burn season.
