In light of recent tragic events, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has turned his gaze to the online communication platform, Discord, following its use by the individual charged with assassinating political figure Charlie Kirk, as reported by Texas Attorney General's official news release. Paxton's concerns with the platform stem from allegations that it fosters an environment ripe for addiction, the dissemination of extremist material, and avenues for the sexual exploitation of minors.

Paxton, supporting the Trump Administration's push against what they define as nihilistic violent extremism, has issued a widened Civil Investigative Demand (CID) to Discord, as he fervently believes that Discord has the responsibility to shield minors from the said dangers, yet the platform has failed to uphold such standards instead it allowed such content to become a cornerstone of its service directly contributing to a supposed surge in national violence. During the expansion of this investigation, the CID will probe into Discord's potential role in the radicalization of users, while seeking evidence of grooming gangs utilising its channels and the extent to which its design may foster addictive behaviors in young people.

Previously, the focus of Paxton's investigations pertained to privacy and safety practices for minors on Discord, but recent developments have broadened the scope to include additional concerns. The Attorney General emphasizes a legal accountability that he asserts Discord has neglected, remarking, "Discord has chosen to allow extremist content, sexual exploitation, and addiction to flourish on its platform," this assertion highlights an alleged failure by the social media company to protect underage users from these harms, as per the Texas Attorney General website.
