Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the launch of the Texas Repeat Offender Program (TxROP), a task force targeting individuals with histories of violent crimes. The program will involve cooperation between the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Houston Police Department, and federal law enforcement agencies, as per the Office of the Texas Governor release.
As part of TxROP, resources from the DPS Air Operations Division, Homeland Security Division, and Criminal Investigations Division will support intelligence gathering and tactical operations. The initiative is designed to identify and arrest repeat offenders in Houston and surrounding areas.
Abbott also highlighted legislative measures already in place to address repeat offenders. These include Senate Bill 9, which strengthens prosecutors’ authority over bail decisions; Senate Bill 40, which prohibits public funding for nonprofits posting bail for offenders; House Bill 75, which increases accountability in criminal case processing; and Senate Joint Resolution 5, which establishes constitutional grounds for denying bail in certain cases.
The program will continue to coordinate state, local, and federal resources to address violent repeat offenders in Houston, with further updates expected as TxROP operations progress.
