Heads up, Clay County residents and commuters: expect some road closures and construction updates that could impact your travel plans in the upcoming week. The Allen Lane railroad crossing near Railroad Ave S. and Filmore Lane in Orange Park, managed by CSX Transportation, is scheduled for a full closure due to maintenance from the evening of October 20 until October 23. According to a Clay County government announcement, local fire departments have coordinated plans to ensure responses are not affected for residents in the vicinity.
If you're traveling through Fleming Island, you might want to take note of the new Radar Road construction. This project will connect Radar Road to Town Center Boulevard with a two-lane roadway, set to include bike lanes and drainage features. The county is also in the midst of major work on County Road 209 (Russell Road), which is being expanded from two to four lanes. Single-lane closures and delays, including possible weekend work, are expected to continue until Spring 2027. Commuters are advised by the county to slow down and use caution when driving through these areas, especially since crews may choose to also work at night to minimize daytime disruption.
County Road 218 in Middleburg isn't being left untouched, with a 2.7-mile stretch undergoing a transformation to a four-lane roadway complete with median, turn lanes, and other amenities. Current updates indicate that detours for drainage work will remain active for the week beginning October 6. Furthermore, Clay Hill's CR218/Spencer Industrial Drive will see single-lane closures during daytime for up to 260 days starting June 16, as crews work on intersection improvements and paving, as conveyed by the Clay County's news release.
Finally, if you find yourself driving around Fleming Island at night, be prepared for potential disruptions. Traffic signal work at the intersection of County Road 220 and Lakeshore Drive West is ongoing and could lead to nighttime lane closures as vehicle detection systems are installed. The county reassures that while these updates might be an inconvenience, they are essential for improvements and the crews are working to quickly and safely complete them. Drivers are urged to adhere to the posted speed limit and be aware of workers on the road to ensure everyone's safety.
