Trinity Health Oakland is slated to expand its agricultural endeavors with the addition of a new food hub, thanks to a substantial $4 million planned gift from retired emergency department physician Ross Weinstein, M.D. The news was reported on October 30 by WWJ Newsradio, detailing the developments at the Pontiac-based hospital's farm operation. The farm, designed to address food insecurity and enhance nutritional health within the community, will benefit not only from the creation of the food hub but also from continual support through the Susan Weinstein Alberts Endowed Farming Fund established by Dr. Weinstein.

Dr. Weinstein, a keen gardener himself, expressed his excitement about the project. "I am inspired by The Farm’s work to feed those in our community that are food insecure," he said, according to ClickOnDetroit. He added, "I like the forward-thinking idea of connecting nutrition with more traditional medicine, as well as community, and resident education. I’m so impressed with how far The Farm has come in just five years, and I’m excited to make this planned gift to support the construction of a food hub, which is a key piece in fully realizing the vision of The Farm."

Fabian Fregoli, M.D., chief medical officer and president of Trinity Health Oakland, underscored the hospital's holistic approach to healthcare. "At Trinity Health, we believe that food is medicine," he articulated in statements obtained by WXYZ. The initiative aims to integrate high-quality medical care with access to fresh, nourishing food and relevant education, forging early conversations that can pivot patient lifestyles towards substantial health improvements.

The upcoming food hub promises to be a center for numerous initiatives focused on well-being, including cooking demonstrations, culinary education classes, and a gathering place for the community. The 1.3-acre farm, featuring a variety of gardens and hoop houses, sits outside Trinity Health Oakland's North Entrance and has been a source of fresh produce for patients and residents since 2020. The addition of the new hub is expected to further enhance these operations – no confirmation has been given by the hospital on when the food hub will be complete.
