Tragedy struck on a Colorado highway last Friday when two drivers were killed in a fiery collision. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the incident occurred around 6:18 p.m. on Highway 287 at Red Mountain Road, north of Livermore, in Larimer County, as described in a report by 9NEWS. CSP detailed that the accident involved a northbound 2018 Honda Accord and a 1987 Chevrolet Suburban traveling south, leading to a head-on crash after the Honda crossed into the opposing lane. Witnesses reported the Honda driver as a potential drunk driver minutes before the accident.
The collision triggered a fire that consumed both vehicles, trapping the drivers within. The Larimer County Coroner's Office is responsible for releasing the identities of the deceased individuals once the next of kin are notified. The stretch of Highway 287 where the crash took place was closed to traffic following the incident, and CSP has not indicated when it will reopen, as mentioned in a KKTV article.
CSP's Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading an ongoing investigation into the crash. In a statement obtained by KDVR, about three minutes before the collision, a 911 call had been placed warning of the Honda's erratic driving. CSP has since been asking motorists in the area to seek alternative routes and prepare for delays.
The area of Highway 287 where the incident occurred is familiar with tragedy. In February of 2024, three University of Wyoming swimmers were killed in a single-vehicle crash. As the community grapples with another devastating event, the thoroughfare remains a grim reminder of the unpredictability and fragility of life on the road. CSP personnel continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the head-on collision, in hopes of understanding the factors that contributed to the tragic outcome.
