Two suspects died and two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers sustained major injuries following a high-speed chase that ended in a tragic collision in San Leandro last Saturday. Initially prompted by a speeding violation, the chase spiraled into a destructive end when both the suspects' vehicle and the police car crashed into a sound wall on Interstate 238.
According to reports from The Mercury News, the incident began around 3:41 AM when the suspects, driving a white Mercedes sedan, failed to comply with a traffic stop on Interstate 580, near Eden Canyon Road in Castro Valley. Leading CHP on a chase, the suspects' failure to navigate a tight, winding exit onto East 14th Street from I-238 resulted in their fatal crash.
Following the initial crash, the CHP vehicle, in pursuit, also met with an accident, striking the same noise barrier. As reported by KRON4, "As a result of the second crash, both CHP officers also sustained major, non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment."
The two officers, whose names have not been released, were following agency protocols during the chase, which is currently not limited by local policies that seek to temper high-speed pursuits. A third victim, a passenger in the Mercedes, was hospitalized with major injuries from the encounter. Responding units from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and the Alameda County Fire Department attended the scene to assist the injured and investigate the crash.
