Heads up to Duluth drivers: A new mill and overlay project is on the horizon for East Superior Street, kicking off on October 23, 2025. The work zone, stretching between 33rd and 45th Avenues E, is being managed by Ulland Brothers Construction, Inc., according to a notice issued by the City of Duluth. While the project promises to bring smoother roads, it will also usher in intermittent closures and temporary inconveniences.
For those living along or commuting through East Superior Street, prepare for some disruptions. The majority of the project will proceed with traffic weaving around the construction, but full closures aren't off the table - be it side streets or driveways, expect some block-by-block work to impact access. Specifically, there's a full stop between 40th and 45th Avenues E slated to begin on October 27, where through traffic will get rerouted to London Road for a span of a week, as pointed out by the City of Duluth's announcement. Keep an eye out for the detour signs if that's part of your regular route.
Parking will also take a hit during construction. 'No Parking' signage will go up as the project necessitates, with the unwelcome footnote that any vehicles left in the no-go zones will be towed, at an expense falling on the owner's shoulders. The work is part of a larger initiative to improve Duluth’s infrastructure and is scheduled for substantial completion by mid-November, offering an end date to the anticipated dance of detours and delays.
For the latest updates, residents are encouraged to refer to the City’s Road Closure Map, which provides real-time information on the project's progress and impact on traffic. The construction, albeit a temporary hurdle, aims to pave the path for a smoother commute in the long run. Anticipate crowning these streets with fresh asphalt as the city takes strides in its commitment to better roadways—just remember to plan for detours and extended travel time until the crews cross the finish line in November.
