A Virginia Beach tourist found herself in need of rescue this past Saturday while trekking on Kaua‘i's rugged Hanakapi‘ai Trail. The Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) sprung into action after receiving a distress call concerning the 57-year-old hiker, according to a report released by the county's official website.
With the clock ticking past 2:25 p.m., fire personnel from the Hanalei Fire Station and the specialized Rescue 3 team took to the skies in Air 1 to come to the hiker's aid. Located at the 1.5-mile marker, with weakness, exhaustion, and nausea overtaking her, the distressed woman was quickly whisked away by the crew for further medical attention. Though exhaustion may have clouded her day, it was the swift response of KFD that brought her to safety and care.
The woman was reportedly assessed at a makeshift landing zone along the trail before being flown to Princeville Airport. From there, American Medical Response personnel for advanced medical treatment took over, continuing the relay of care that began amongst the forested cliffs of Hā‘ena.
KFD, following the incident as clear as around 3:40 p.m., emphasizes the importance of preparation and awareness for those venturing onto the Hanakapi‘ai and Kalalau trails. Known for their unforgiving character, the trails pose a potent combination of steep grades, unpredictable weather, and spotty water sources that can turn a day hike into a dangerous ordeal. In an effort to prevent emergencies, hikers are encouraged "to stay hydrated, know their limits, and turn back before fatigue sets in," as noted by the county's official website.
