The Hawai‘i Police Department is reaching out to engage with the community over a cup of coffee. Residents of West Hawai‘i are invited to join the local police for a series of events across the region as part of the department's effort to foster open communication and relationships with community members.
According to a release posted on the Hawaii Police Department's website, these "Coffee With a Cop" gatherings are designed to be casual with no set agenda, giving the public a chance to casually meet and converse with their district police officers. Topics may range from personal stories to concerns within the neighborhood.
Each meeting will be held at a different local coffee shop, providing an approachable venue for discussions. The meetings are scheduled for various times and locations throughout October, aiming to accommodate diverse schedules and reach as many community members as possible.
Particulars about the events, including the exact dates, times, and coffee shop locations, can be found on the Hawaii Police Department's website. The kick-off event will be at Kona Heaven Coffee on October 16, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and subsequent events will occur at various other coffee spots including Kona Mountain Coffee Co., Gypsea Gelato, and Uncle Kimo’s Coffee Shop.
For additional information or questions regarding "Coffee with a Cop," the public is advised to reach out directly to the Kona Community Policing Section at the numbers provided on the Hawaii Police Department's website. The aim is to provide a relaxed atmosphere for officers and community members to get to know each other and build trust, a vital component in effective community policing.
