Residents of Woodland in Yolo County are reeling after a recent mail theft incident led to the compromise of 135 election ballots. According to a Fox40 report, stolen ballots, along with other mail, were recovered from four multi-residence mailboxes. Unfortunately, some of the recovered mail, including 30 ballots, was too water-damaged to be used and will be replaced.
Yolo County has been urgently addressing the fallout, with Jesse Salinas, Yolo County's Chief Election Official, stating they "wanted to make sure nobody was missing the opportunity to vote in this important election." Salinas, affirming the county's commitment to voter participation, said that replacement ballots are being swiftly issued to the affected residents, as per an interview with KCRA. Affected voters at specific addresses in Woodland, including Shiloh Ct., Pearl Ct./Way, Carlsbad Pl., and Pinnacles Dr., might have experienced disruptions to their mail service.
The remaining 105 untouched voters will receive contact from election staff to ensure they have their ballots. In the event of not receiving their ballots or if they are unreachable, they will be issued replacements. These replacement ballots will come with an identification number ending in "-2" to differentiate them from the initial mailing, ensuring election integrity.
According to KCRA, Salinas also highlighted multiple voting methods available to individuals: "Voters can also take it to a drop box. We have 15 drop boxes spread out throughout Yolo County, and we go and pick them up every two days and they're secured. In addition, they can come to a voting center." A letter explaining the circumstances behind the issuance of the new ballots will accompany all replacement ballots, ensuring residents are well informed of the situation. For voters seeking information on voting centers and ballot drop boxes, resources have been made readily available with detailed instructions.
