A recent officer-involved shooting that occurred last Saturday has become the 15th such incident this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Directors of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Edwin Cayenne and Chief Alan Parker, offered details on the events that unfolded on Myrtle Avenue. The incident was sparked by a reported stolen vehicle in the Brentwood area and intensified after a police chase led to a crash and a subsequent shooting, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The escalation began around 6 p.m. Saturday when an officer spotted the stolen vehicle on Moncrief Road, near 13th Street, and started tailing it, awaiting backup. The situation spiraled as the vehicle took off, leading to a chase that ended when the stolen car crashed into an officer's vehicle and a building on Myrtle Avenue. After the crash, multiple individuals fled from the vehicle, prompting police to pursue on foot. "The officer told the suspect multiple times to stop reaching into his pants, but the suspect did not comply," according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office post. In response, Officer Jacob Cahill fired multiple shots, critically wounding a suspect.

The injured suspect was taken to a local hospital and remains in critical condition. Notably, one officer sustained a broken nose during the vehicular collision involved in this chase. Cayenne and Parker mentioned no other officer injuries from the incident.
