The city of Las Vegas is grappling with the aftermath of a road-rage incident that claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy, identified as Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria. The Clark County coroner's office listed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head, ruling it a homicide, 8 News Now reported. The incident occurred on the 215 Southern Beltway near Gibson Road during a morning commute that turned tragically violent.
The altercation began when two vehicles, ensnarled in the fever of rush hour, began jockeying for position on the freeway and after a verbal confrontation between the drivers, Tyler Matthew Johns, 22, allegedly pulled a handgun and fired into the other vehicle hitting and killing the child who was on his way to school "This child was on his way to school today, and lives have been changed dramatically," Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader remarked in a news conference, as per statements made to FOX5 Vegas. Following the incident, the stepfather of the victim reportedly rammed Johns' vehicle, and subsequently an argument ensued until police officers arrived and apprehended Johns.
Johns is now facing serious legal implications, with charges including open murder, discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle, and firing a gun from a vehicle. He has since been held at the Henderson Detention Center without bail, according to 8 News Now. The firearm involved in the incident was located, adding to the evidence against him.
In a justice system response to the severity of the crime, a judge has denied bail for Johns, aligning with Nevada law that typically denies bail to defendants facing first-degree murder charges, however bail could potentially be reconsidered at a later date, but in this event the judge in question chose to deny Johns the possibility at this stage, Hoodline notes Johns' next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
