
A tragic incident occurred last night in Southwest Jacksonville, resulting in the death of a 32-year-old bicyclist. The Florida Highway Patrol reported the accident took place around 6:22 p.m. near the intersection of 103rd Street and Blanding Boulevard. According to First Coast News, the man was attempting to cross 103rd Street when he was struck by a vehicle.
The victim, who was not identified by name, was traveling in a northbound direction and attempted to cross the street at a non-crosswalk area. The News4Jax report detailed that the driver of a westbound minivan attempted to avoid collision by shifting into the left lane; however, the bicyclist concurrently turned around, inadvertently moving into the path of the vehicle.
The 32-year-old Jacksonville resident died at the scene, and he was noted to have not been wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. As explained by a report obtained from Action News Jax, neither the 21-year-old driver of the van nor her 18-year-old passenger sustained injuries. The driver had attempted to take evasive action to avoid the cyclist but was unable to prevent the tragic impact.
Post-incident, the driver of the vehicle involved drove to a nearby gas station to await authorities, suggests the information provided by First Coast News. The Florida Highway Patrol has yet to release further details regarding this incident.
