A 5th-grade student at Oakleaf Village Elementary was taken into custody for possessing a knife on school grounds. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reported on a Facebook post that the student had a 3-inch blade in her backpack, which was discovered during a criminal investigation with the assistance of school officials on Thursday.

The investigation involved interviews with the student, her parents, and other students, revealing that the knife had been brought to school the previous day. A thorough threat assessment found no indication of a threat. The knife was confiscated, and the student was arrested on weapons possession charges, as there was no lawful reason or authorized purpose for it to be at school. She was subsequently transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice – Duval Detention Center, according to the CCSO.

Under Florida law (statute 790.115), possessing a weapon—including firearms and pocketknives—on school property without authorization is a third-degree felony. This applies during school hours and at any school-related event, with strict penalties for violations.
