Staff Sgt. Cody Luhrs of the Air National Guard’s 164th Airlift Wing saved a woman’s life during a routine Memphis Safe Task Force patrol after a semi-truck driver reported her unresponsive and not breathing. Using his advanced medical training, Luhrs lifted the woman from the truck and, with another Guardsman, administered NARCAN to reverse an opioid overdose, according to the Tennessee Military Department.
"I like being able to help out in the community," Luhrs said. "It feels good to be able to give something back. I just got caught in an extraordinary moment on an ordinary day and- I’m glad that my training ensured I was capable of handling that," as reported by the Tennessee Military Department.
A woman’s life was saved after Luhrs administered NARCAN, which stabilized her breathing and improved her color and alertness. He monitored her until Memphis Fire Department personnel arrived to take her to the hospital. Luhrs has been a firefighter and Advanced EMT with the Collierville Fire Department for four years and has served in the Army National Guard since 2009, as stated by the Tennessee Military Department.
