Amazon is expanding its Prime Air drone delivery service to Hazel Park, Michigan, with aspirations to have the skies a little busier and the front porches of residents in the area a lot fuller by the end of 2025. Residents within a 7.5-mile radius of the Hazel Park delivery station, including Highland Park, Center Line, Madison Heights, and Oak Park, are set to experience this service intended to deliver packages within the hour of ordering, reported CBS News Detroit.
In Pontiac, Amazon's drones are operating from facilities near the company's fulfillment center on Featherstone Road, and now, Hazel Park is poised to join this network. The drones used in the service are capable of delivering items of up to 5 pounds, for a fee of $4.99 for Prime members, and $9.99 for non-Prime members, as per information furnished by The Detroit News. The community is showing varied reactions, with citizens expressing both excitement at the prospect of expedited delivery and concerns over the new flying visitors.
While some locals see the benefits, such as Kierra Lovelady who finds the technological advance inevitable, others like Roxy Orozco remain skeptical about having drones delivering to their homes. Dan Chicklas admitted, it might be "a little disturbing" at first but expects that adaptation will follow, according to interviews by CBS News Detroit. Addressing safety concerns, Lauren Wilson, Prime Air drone operations manager, emphasized the focus on putting out a product safe for everyone, including "neighborhoods, company, people, pets, and property."
Amazon has had its fair share of challenges, though, with concerns over noise and privacy arising from their drone delivery services, particularly noted when the company launched in Texas last year. However, the tech conglomerate claims, that the newer MK30 model drones being introduced in locations like Pontiac and Waco feature advanced noise reduction and enhanced sensors, as reported by Newsweek. This new drone design aims to integrate discreetly into communities. "When you watch the [MK30] drone take off and transition for forward flight at transit altitude, it does it seamlessly and disappears into the soundscape," said Stephen Wells, chief project engineer for the Prime Air team, in a statement given to Newsweek.
While Amazon sets its sight on big plans, claiming an aim to deliver up to 500 million packages annually by drone by 2030, the service is currently available in select cities in Arizona, and Texas, alongside Pontiac in Michigan, with Hazel Park slated to be added to the roster. These developments mark a turning point in logistics and personal shopping, promising speed and convenience, and perhaps changing the daily soundscape and skyline of local neighborhoods. Amazon Prime Air is now operating in San Antonio, Waco, according to local sources, and in Pontiac, Michigan, as detailed by Newsweek, with an intention to add more cities to their coverage map in the near future.
