What started as a few suspicious missing-car reports at a small Anna-area mechanic shop has turned into a full-blown alleged chop shop case that Collin County investigators say stretches across county lines.
Collin County deputies arrested local mechanic Brian Holgate and associate Calvin McGowen this fall in what authorities describe as an auto theft and chop shop operation. Both men were booked into custody and face multiple felony charges tied to roughly $250,000 in reported losses that investigators say span several counties.
According to a press release from the Collin County Sheriff's Office, deputies started getting calls in August 2024 about vehicles that kept vanishing from a mechanic shop outside Anna. When investigators circled back to the registered owners, they say the stories did not line up with the shop's stolen-vehicle reports, raising suspicions that Holgate was taking customers' cars without permission, then stripping them for parts or selling them off.
Local reporting and jail records show the arrests did not happen all at once. McGowen was arrested on Oct. 23 and Holgate on Nov. 12, according to The Dallas Express. The outlet reports that Holgate faces theft counts in different value ranges along with a charge of driving with an invalid license, while McGowen is charged with two counts of engaging in organized criminal activity. The Dallas Express also cited Collin County jail records for bond figures.
Investigation And Evidence
Deputies served search warrants at locations tied to Holgate and McGowen and say the haul of evidence linked the pair to thefts from a Collin County storage facility, along with related cases in neighboring Grayson County, according to the sheriff's release. Investigators are still sorting through what they recovered.
"This remains an active and ongoing investigation," the sheriff's office said, noting that it is working with surrounding jurisdictions to identify additional victims and to uncover any related criminal activity. Anyone who believes they might have been targeted or who has information is asked to contact Investigator Tristan Varvil at 972-547-5100 or [email protected], per the release.
Legal Stakes
Both suspects were booked on multiple felony counts, including engaging in organized criminal activity, which is a third-degree felony, and theft charges that range from state jail felonies to third-degree felonies, according to the sheriff's office.
Under Texas law, a third-degree felony carries two to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, and a state jail felony is punishable by 180 days to two years in a state jail facility plus a possible fine, according to Justia, which summarizes Texas Penal Code Sections 12.34 and 12.35.
Where This Fits In North Texas
This case is landing in the middle of a busy season for North Texas theft investigators. The Collin County arrests follow a string of recent busts in the region, tying auto shops and storage facilities to organized theft, including a Dallas case this month in which police say they uncovered nearly $1 million in stolen cargo at an auto shop, as reported by The Dallas Express.
Law enforcement officials say the same story keeps playing out. Rims, tires, and assorted car parts are turning up in large quantities, often pointing to coordinated fencing operations that lean on small repair businesses and storage units as cover. Investigators have been urging potential victims to double-check their records and to report anything that looks even slightly off.
Collin County detectives say their probe into the Anna-area mechanic operation is still very much in motion and that more victims or charges could surface. Anyone who thinks their vehicle or parts may be tied to this case is encouraged to contact the sheriff's office. We will update this space as officials release additional details or file new charges.
