San Jose’s Archer Aviation has marked its territory in Southern California with a strategic move that puts the burgeoning air taxi industry on the frontline of urban transit evolution. In a series of announcements, Archer declared it had purchased the Hawthorne Municipal Airport for a tidy sum of $126 million, as noted by KRON4. However, the Mayor of Hawthorne, Alex Vargas, clarified on social media, stating, per SFGATE, “Archer has bought the ground lease to our Hawthorne airport and will make it a hub for its all electric aircraft air-taxi service!” The airport, situated enticingly close to the SoFi Stadium, is poised to become a nerve center for Archer's planned LA air taxi network, as well as shuttle services for the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
While enthusiasm from the tech company’s end is palpable, residents and groups voice a tangled mix of excitement and concern. The Hawthorne Quiet Skies residents association expressed shock over Archer Aviation's claim, worried about potential increases in pollution and noise levels, which they say have been poorly managed by the city. They conveyed in a news release that, “We think the revolution in autonomous air transportation is exciting and we support the California innovators working towards a better quality of life for all. But that’s the key — all of us need to participate in this process as respected, trusting, and collaborative partners,” clearly indicating a need for more inclusive dialogue regarding the undertaking. This sentiment was captured by SFGATE.
Archer Aviation has ambitious plans for the space. Its signature aircraft, Midnight, is being championed as an eco-friendly solution poised to replace gridlocked car traffic with clean, calm flights across the Los Angeles sky, a futuristic symbol of hope for a future beyond the congested realities on the ground. Adam Goldstein, CEO and founder of Archer Aviation, dreams big for Midnight's role during the LA28 Games. "We want to transform the way people get around Los Angeles and leave a legacy that shapes the future of transportation in America,” Goldstein told SFGATE, “There’s no better time to do that than during the LA28 Games." The aircraft, still under the certifying authority of the FAA and other aviation bodies, promises to feature Team USA's and LA28's logos as it ushers passengers above the city.
