In a recent move amid the ongoing struggles with food assistance programs, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs announced a boost in resources for SNAP recipients, introducing an additional $1.8 million in ARPA funds. This funding aims to support residents who are grappling with the federal government’s handling of SNAP benefits. Hobbs has also launched a statewide food pantry database, providing a tool for Arizonans to locate food resources in their communities.
Gov. Hobbs criticized the federal government's approach, specifically calling out the Trump administration for their role in withholding these crucial benefits from Arizona's vulnerable populations. "It is disgraceful that the Trump administration continues to withhold food assistance from Arizona veterans, seniors and children, even after a court order to fully fund the benefits," said Hobbs, citing the negative repercussions brought on by what she described as cynical political maneuvering in Washington, according to a statement obtained by the Office of the Arizona Governor.
The funding distribution includes $1.5 million earmarked for the Arizona Food Bank Network and its affiliates, bolstering food banks across the state, with a $250,000 portion specifically dedicated to emergency food provision in partnership with Tribal communities. An additional $300,000 is allocated for the Food Bucks Now program, providing SNAP households with vouchers for fresh produce at various markets and retailers.
"On behalf of our member food banks, we are grateful for the State’s efforts to continue to find funding to support in meeting the critical need we are seeing right now," April Bradham, President and CEO of the Arizona Food Bank Network, told the Office of the Arizona Governor. Food banks are reportedly seeing a surge in first-time visitors and are striving to satisfy an already high demand. The funds are expected to have an immediate impact, as they will allow for the direct purchase of food to assist banks and pantries across Arizona in meeting day-to-day needs.
Adrienne Udarbe, Executive Director at Pinnacle Prevention, spoke to the ongoing challenges and worries among Arizonans about the uncertainty of SNAP benefits. "We are continuing to see long lines and anxiousness with the uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits," Udarbe mentioned, as reported by the Office of the Arizona Governor. The Food Bucks Now initiative, she noted, plays a crucial role in providing resource access at familiar locations, thus honoring individuals' choices and dignity. The funding announcement follows an initial $1.8 million in ARPA funds previously released to shore up the state's food assistance during a time when SNAP faced hurdles.
