The City of Arlington has successfully wrapped up Phase I of the Residential Rebuild Sunnyvale Drive project, a major milestone in efforts to enhance local infrastructure. This $3.8 million initiative, greenlit by voters, aimed to increase the mobility and overall livability in areas flanking Sunnyvale Drive in East Arlington and extending through Marcellus Court and Slaughter Street in North Arlington. The Arlington Public Works announced the completion of the project, which kicked off in August 2023 and spanned nearly two years to its completion in June 2025.
According to the city's outlined plan, Phase I's objectives included tackling severe pavement deterioration and outdated infrastructure. To directly address these challenges, improvements involved a series of upgrades, such as overhauling asphalt for concrete surfaces and renewing critical underground water and sewer infrastructure. Additionally, storm systems were upgraded to better mitigate future water-related issues, while new sidewalks, markings, and streetlights were installed to significantly boost the safety and accessibility for the community. The goal was to not only create a more manageable traffic situation but also to generally bolster the aesthetics and functionality of the neighborhoods involved.
The project resonates with Arlington City Council's strategic priorities, which place a strong emphasis on strengthening community bonds and enhancing mobility. The funding for these significant upgrades originated from the 2018 Bond Election, with Community Development Block Grants providing supplementary financial support. As per the city's website, this phase of the Sunnyvale Drive Project was part of the larger $10.3 million 2022 Capital Improvements Project, segmenting a broader commitment to Residential Rebuild Programs.
