In an effort to tackle food insecurity during the holiday season, Arlington Public Library is channeling community spirit into concrete action with a food drive running until December 31. Arlington residents with spare pantry items can play Santa by donating shelf-stable foods across multiple library locations, as detailed by the City of Arlington.
The call is out for canned goods, including fruits, vegetables, meats, and soups. Nut butters, macaroni and cheese, rice, and beans are also on the wish list, alongside Thanksgiving-specific items like pie mix and stuffing. Perishables, dairy, and any opened or expired items will have to sit this one out, though the drive is accepting only non-perishables.
Contributions to this community effort can be made at several branches throughout Arlington, with various hours accommodating early birds and night owls alike. Locations include East Library and Recreation Center, George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, Northeast Branch Library, Ron Wright Lake Arlington Branch Library, Southeast Branch Library, Southwest Branch Library, and Woodland West Branch Library.
The spirit of giving is not just in the food donations. The Arlington Public Library has also put together a robust list of local nonprofits providing community resources. Those in need, or who know someone who is, can find support through the Library's compiled list.
