An armed person may be barricaded inside a South Sacramento apartment after a domestic violence call turned into an hours-long standoff yesterday morning, drawing a major police response to the 6200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Neighbors reported a surge of officers flooding the block as patrol units ringed the building and tactical teams rolled in, turning the normally quiet stretch of MLK Boulevard into an active police operation.
What police say
According to FOX40, Sacramento Police Department officers were first called out around 11:30 a.m. Sunday for a reported domestic violence incident in the 6200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Once on scene, officers said they believed the suspect to be armed and potentially barricaded inside an apartment. Police told FOX40 they had the location surrounded and were in communication with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office SWAT team to assist at the scene.
Sheriff's SWAT frequently assists on barricades
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Detail is routinely brought in on high risk barricade situations, backing up local police with negotiators, K9 teams and less lethal options when needed.
In a recent media release, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office detailed how its team used CS gas and a K9 to resolve a separate hours-long standoff safely. Those are the kinds of tactical tools and personnel police said they had requested for the South Sacramento apartment scene on Sunday.
Investigation ongoing
As of the latest update, officers had not released the suspect's name or said whether anyone was injured, as noted by FOX40. Authorities described the situation as still developing while officers worked to secure the area, and investigators remained on scene sorting through what led up to the tense standoff on MLK Boulevard.
