The Latin American Association’s Outreach Center in Atlanta held its annual Grocery Giveaway Food Drive, providing groceries to more than 450 families with support from approximately 75 volunteers. The event was organized in partnership with the Atlanta Hawks and CareSource. Alexis Roe, the Hawks’ VP of Community Impact, said the initiative was in response to increasing food needs in the community, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
The Latin American Association noted an increased demand for food assistance, partly due to the ongoing effects of the government shutdown and rising food prices. Many, including government workers recovering from lost wages, have sought additional support. Andrea Smith, Chief Development Officer for the LAA, told FOX 5 Atlanta that the organization has seen a 70 percent month-over-month increase in clients seeking food, adding that some people are still catching up even with SNAP benefits restored.
The demand for food continues despite the Grocery Giveaway’s success. The Latin American Association recently called for additional donations following a freeze in SNAP benefits. According to 11Alive, the amount of food distributed from their pantry increased from 22,243 pounds in October 2024 to 37,870 pounds in October this year.
The Latin American Association accepts support through monetary donations, which are used to purchase fresh produce and culturally appropriate foods, as well as in-kind donations such as dried or canned beans, pasta, and canned soup. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with distributing food to those in need.
