In a move aimed at bolstering the leadership of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Averi M. Turner has been sworn in as the new Commissioner for District 2. The appointment came swift on the heels of her predecessor's resignation, with the board voting her in on November 5, according to official sources.
Turner is stepping into the shoes left empty by Becka Thompson, who resigned in early October this year. Turner's appointment came after an open application period between Oct. 10 and Oct. 24, where several candidates were considered for the position. She has now taken on the role and will serve out the remaining term, which concludes on January 2, 2026.
The choice of Turner brings to the table an individual with a diverse background in both education and community service. With a history as an educator, an IB Coordinator, and a leader in instructional coaching, her involvement extends beyond the classroom into the realms of state boards and advisory committees. These positions have seen her advocate for equity, leadership development, and amplifying youth opportunities, which should translate well in her park stewardship duties.
Turner's vision for the parks in District 2 aligns with her professional passion, focusing on creating spaces that encourage inclusivity. “Her approach to park stewardship blends fiscal responsibility with a deep commitment to equity, environmental sustainability, and community voice," noted the official statement from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Turner herself is intent on ensuring parks remain accessible havens for all residents, in particular, for youth and families.
