An incident during a high school football game has affected both Bell High School and Fernandina Beach High School communities. Daniel Byers, an 18-year-old player from Bell High, was arrested after striking a 15-year-old Fernandina Beach player in the head with a helmet. According to the Fernandina Beach Police Department, the attack followed Byers “aggressively pushing” his opponent, as reported by First Coast News.

During the incident, referees and coaches tried to control the situation, but the confrontation spread onto the field. Video shared on social media shows Byers removing his opponent’s helmet and striking him with it. Byers has been charged with one count of battery. The game ended with Fernandina Beach winning 48-21, but the focus has shifted from the game to legal consequences.

After the incident, law enforcement responded. Two Fernandina Beach police officers at the game secured the scene. Bell High School players were escorted off Amelia Island by the Fernandina Beach Police Department as a safety precaution, according to WCJB.

Reather Bennett, a team mom who knows the injured player, told News4Jax that she was shocked and worried after finding the player bleeding and in shock. She added that her son, who has played with the victim since kindergarten, was also affected by the incident.

The Nassau County School District acknowledged the incident and praised the players’ response during the situation. It also confirmed that the incident has been reported to the Sunshine State Athletic Conference for investigation.
