Black Friday shoppers in Arlington got an unwelcome scare last night when reports of gunfire sent police rushing to a cluster of businesses across from The Parks Mall, officials said. Officers found evidence that two separate groups had exchanged gunfire in the 4200 block of South Cooper Street and searched the area for victims and witnesses. Authorities reported no immediate injuries and said they did not believe the public was in danger as officers continued their work. Detectives canvassed the surrounding retail corridor into the evening, looking for security video and eyewitnesses.
According to The Dallas Morning News, Sgt. Richard Coleman said initial reports indicated that "two separate groups encountered one another and exchanged gunfire" in the 4200 block of South Cooper Street. The outlet reported that, as of about 7:15 p.m., officers had not located any victims and that the incident did not occur on mall property, even though it played out across from the shopping center.
As reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Arlington officers responded after a shots-fired call and later confirmed the exchange happened near a business in the 4200 block. Reporter Lillie Davidson noted that, by nightfall, police had not identified any suspects and that investigators were collecting evidence and taking statements from people in the area.
Nearby history and shopper concerns
While officials stressed that Friday's shooting took place off mall property, the Parks Mall corridor has seen violence in past years, including a 2023 incident that led to several arrests, per Hoodline. That history has left some local businesses asking for more patrols during peak shopping weekends like Black Friday.
Police: No ongoing threat
Sgt. Coleman told The Dallas Morning News that there was "no ongoing threat to the public" and that officers would follow up on tips and any surveillance footage. The department urged anyone with information to contact investigators as the probe continued.
What investigators are looking for
Police asked witnesses and anyone with video of the confrontation to come forward, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. At this stage, officials had not released information about possible suspects, weapons recovered, or motives.
