A Canadian man has been handed a three-year prison sentence for his role in an interstate drug smuggling operation. Dontavius Forbes, 27, was caught with a hefty 90 pounds of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, a drug well entrenched in party and rave culture, but nonetheless illegal under U.S. federal law.

Forbes, implicated in planning to distribute the Schedule I controlled substance, submitted a guilty plea earlier this year. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey J. Helmick passed down the sentence on November 21, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio. After serving his time, Forbes faces deportation back to Canada.

The turn of events that led to Forbes's arrest began when he came under the gaze of a U.S. Border Patrol agent at a service plaza in Sandusky County, near the I-80/90 Ohio turnpike. The agent's curiosity was piqued by the Canadian license plates on a compact SUV, which led to an encounter with Forbes and a consensual vehicle search on August 7, 2024. Closer inspection revealed crafty alterations to the cargo area of the vehicle, where authorities discovered secret compartments filled with the illegal substance.

A field test left no room for doubt about the contents—one of the vacuum-sealed packages contained MDMA. Additionally, agents found just under $3,000 in cash in the vehicle. Forbes, now convicted, has three years ahead to reflect on the choices that resulted in his incarceration; an unwanted end to what might have started as an entrepreneurial gamble.
