As the city comes together to share in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada has once again stepped up to the plate to provide free meals to the community's homeless and vulnerable. Celebrating its 60th year of service, the organization extended its reach to over 750 individuals on Thursday, offering a touch of comfort and a warm plate this holiday season. According to a News3LV report, the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility was the backdrop for this heartfelt event, where traditional Thanksgiving items were on the menu.
This holiday feast was an impressive spread, including 325 pounds of roasted turkey, equal amounts of garlic mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, and green bean casserole, complemented by 25 gallons each of turkey gravy and cranberry sauce. To warmly top off the meal, 65 gallons of hot cocoa were prepared alongside 750 slices of pumpkin pie, ensuring a sweet end to a hearty meal. A report by FOX5 Vegas detailed that preparation for this massive undertaking began as early as 4:30 a.m., showcasing the dedication to bring together a traditional feast for those less fortunate.
Distinguished guests, including Mayor Shelley Berkley and Attorney General Aaron Ford, participated in the meal distribution. Berkley, attending as mayor for the first time, told FOX5 Vegas that it is important to give back to the community before enjoying their own Thanksgiving dinner.
One recipient expressed his gratitude to FOX5 Vegas, stating, "I came here 11 years ago from Florida and I didn’t know anyone. So this is a real support for me, you know, to have this with the meal and everything I have here. So I’m very grateful and thankful and I’m enjoying my meal."
