As the federal government shutdown persists, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) continues to battle escalating flight disruptions with passengers facing an increased number of delays and cancellations. Data from FlightAware highlighted by QC News shows that today, there were 73 delays and 50 cancellations.
Travel complications worsened Saturday morning when CLT had to implement a ground stop due to staffing shortages in the air traffic control tower, the stop was temporary lifting about an hour later, but was followed by a ground delay until around 2 p.m. as reported by Fox Carolina, by Sunday, the number of disruptions increased with the airport reporting 64 cancellations and 104 delays up until just after noon according to statistics from FlightAware published by WCNC.
The core of these operational challenges stems from the ramifications of the ongoing shutdown, with essential federal workers such as air-traffic controllers and TSA agents mandated to work without pay; this situation, has led to staffing shortages in multiple towers and control centers that are straining the system. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been compelled to require, roughly 40 major airports, including CLT, to reduce air traffic which affects up to 4,000 flights daily nationwide; this information, was confirmed in a statement obtained by WCNC.
These developments demand increased flexibility and precaution from travelers; CLT, in a statement provided to QC News, advocates passengers to "check their flight status with their airline before coming to the Airport and arrive at the terminal at least two hours before domestic departures and three hours before international flights," they also request, for patience and understanding as both the airport and airlines strive to minimize the turmoil and ensure safety, amid the "unprecedented situation." The airport further expresses deep gratitude toward the TSA and ATC employees who continue to exhibit a "steadfast commitment" to aiding travelers despite the ongoing fiscal impasse.
