A Charlotte man finds himself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly attempting to fraud the system for nearly $81,000, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Justin Chidozie Nwachukwu, 29, of Alanbrook Road, has been slapped with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense charges, both of which are felonies.
According to the Department of Insurance, Nwachukwu's accusations stem from an illicit insurance claim concerning the theft of his 2021 Dodge Charger on which, not only did he provide allegedly false and contradictory statements to special agents and National General but, the vehicle's parts were found installed in another car under his use. Compounding his legal woes, the claim led to a hefty insurance payout of $80,881.87, which also covered the car's loan lien.
These alleged deceptive maneuvers didn't go unnoticed for long, with the debacle unfolding between October and November 2023. Justice didn't drag its feet, and Nwachukwu got cuffed on November 7, 2023, he was denied bond, and a court appearance is set for November 24 at the Randolph County District Court.
Advocating for vigilance, the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey implores residents to not turn a blind eye to such fraudulent acts, stating "Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," a point he emphasized as he reminded fellow North Carolinians that, ultimately, it's the honest consumers who bear the brunt of such schemes through inflated insurance premiums, as per the North Carolina Department of Insurance website.
The Department of Insurance is taking a firm stance against white-collar crimes by encouraging the public to step forward with any insider intelligence. For those who suspect foul play in the realms of insurance fraud; it's urged to contact the authorities.
