Two Charlotte residents are facing federal charges after incidents involving their use of vehicles against law enforcement officers conducting immigration operations. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina has announced the charges against Cristobal Maltos, 24, and Miguel Angel Garcia Martinez, 24, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice. Both men are accused of assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers, with Maltos having been released on bond following his initial court appearance and Martinez remaining in custody.

Martinez allegedly engaged in a dangerous car chase on Sunday, as he fled from attempts by law enforcement to approach his van near locations of immigration enforcement operations; he's said to have driven recklessly, evaded police despite lights and sirens, and eventually rammed his vehicle into a government car, something that carries the weight of endangering the lives of four federal officers inside before getting apprehended.

In a separate incident on Monday, Maltos is alleged to have followed federal agents in a Black Honda Civic, and when approached, used his vehicle to strike a Border Patrol officer with the side mirror before being taken into custody. In a statement obtained by the Justice Department, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson affirmed the right to peaceful protest but drew a clear line, "The charges against the defendants, however, allege acts of violence targeting law enforcement officers."

The incidents involving Martinez and Maltos were noted to be separate from the organized protests that occurred around the same time, with U.S. Attorney Ferguson acknowledging the peaceful nature of these demonstrations and expressing gratitude toward law enforcement officers who maintained public safety. Despite these assurances and the First Amendment rights praised by the U.S. Attorney, the two men now find themselves amidst serious allegations that have the full attention of federal authorities including ICE, the U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, and the FBI.
