Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, a steadfast presence in the NFL community, announced on Sunday that a liver transplant is imminent in his battle against life-threatening internal bleeding. As reported by the Cleveland News, the 61-year-old has been under medical care at University Hospitals, undergoing a series of surgical procedures aimed at managing his condition.
With the Cleveland Browns showcasing their support prior to their game against the Baltimore Ravens, they sent out a heartfelt tribute stating, "With the support of those here today and all Browns fans, Bernie we are cheering you on and with you every step of the way, stay strong and keep fighting" a statement which captured the collective hope for Kosar's recovery and strength amidst his health battle; the moment of solidarity was covered by Cleveland19.
On Monday, an infection delayed the transplant, leading to additional aggressive procedures on Tuesday and another on Wednesday to contain the bleeding, as reported by WKYC. By Thursday, Kosar faced further challenges with excessive bleeding overnight, necessitating two more surgeries, bringing the count to seven procedures in a matter of days.
In a personal video, Kosar expressed his tribulations and the urgency of the situation saying, "All the duress right now, I could really use your love, support, and prayers today" and providing a stark reminder of his condition, adding, "I want to say how great I'm doing, but wow, the bleeding came back way aggressively in the middle of the night, so finishing up my fifth procedure," he shared both the determination and the reality of his struggle fondly remembered for his time on the field, and now facing a defining off-field challenge according to communications with WKYC's Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins and an update he provided to Jay Crawford. The community continues to rally around Kosar, anticipating favorable news regarding the transplant surgery anticipated for the following Monday.
