Cleveland State University recently celebrated one of its own for achievements that exemplify the institution's mission. Julie Onderak, a 2025 graduate, has been recognized as a CSU Student of Distinction. During her time at CSU, Onderak participated in significant internships, which led to her securing a position with Karg Corporation, as reported by CSU News.
A major stepping stone in her academic journey was the Ohio Export Internship Program, where she learned the intricacies of international business operations. "I learned to adapt to different cultures I encountered daily, adjusting my communication style based on who I was speaking with, where they were from, and their unique needs," Onderak told CSU News. After excelling in the program, her host company, Karg Corporation, hired her, leading to further opportunities.
Apart from her professional achievements, Onderak also highlighted the importance of the connections she made with faculty members at CSU. She credits Chris Lees, an EAN counselor, and Jacob Ott, a career specialist, as instrumental mentors in her college experience. Both offered her guidance, well beyond standard curriculum expectations.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Onderak expressed the growth mindset instilled by her time at CSU. "You won’t always know the answer, and that’s okay. As I have allowed myself to make mistakes and take this unwarranted expectation off myself, I have been able to learn things in ways I never could have under the weight of perfectionism," Onderak explained to CSU News. This realization has not only shaped her academic efforts but also prepared her for the imperfections of the real world.
In terms of fulfilling CSU’s mission, Onderak's entry into extracurricular activities, namely her role on the Entrepreneurship Club's board, has allowed her to lead and guide other students to resources. Her involvement exemplifies the university’s dedication to nurturing leadership and service among its students. While she looks toward the future with plans to continue her work with Karg Corporation, Onderak recognizes that crucial opportunities like the Ohio Export Internship Program have shaped her career trajectory. "Without the OEIP, I would not be in the position I am fortunate and thankful to be in today," she stated through CSU News.
