In an impressive display of forensic acumen, detectives from the CMPD Cold Case Unit have successfully identified a male victim whose remains were discovered back in 2016. According to a statement obtained by charlottenc.gov, the remains that were initially found in a wooded area on University Pointe Boulevard have been confirmed through investigative genetic genealogy to belong to Kenneth Robert McCarthy, who disappeared in 2013.
After traditional methods failed to identify the remains, a bone sample was sent to Othram Labs for advanced DNA testing in 2022. Subsequently, the results were uploaded to consumer genealogy databases including GEDmatch and Family Tree DNA, but initial efforts did not yield any leads. It wasn't until a collaborative effort was initiated with Ramapo College of New Jersey Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center that progress was made. A volunteer team spent six months and hundreds of hours to finally provide a potential identity for the victim. CMPD detectives later managed to confirm the identity after reaching out to the family of the missing person and obtaining a relative's DNA profile.
The late Kenneth McCarthy was a New Jersey native who worked in IT and had relocated to Charlotte. His family had been unrelentingly searching for him since his disappearance. They have since expressed profound gratitude to the investigative team that dedicated countless hours to bring closure to their long-lasting uncertainty.
Extending thanks to all involved, CMPD acknowledges the work of not only Othram Labs but also First Genes and the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification among others. A special nod was given to the many volunteer genealogists whose dedication was pivotal in solving this cold case. The CMPD continues ardently to identify at least 8 other victims, with cases dating as far back as 1932. With the investigation still ongoing, they invite anyone with pertinent information to come forward, offering multiple avenues for tips including a direct line to the Homicide Unit and the anonymous Charlotte Crime Stoppers service.
The case's latest developments and any future updates will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division as they become available. Meanwhile, the community may keep informed by referencing the detailed report: 20160129-1841-01.
