In Cocke County, a call to warm the bodies and spirits of children in need has been heralded by the Emergency Management Agency. "Operation Jammies & Jackets," a month-long drive to collect warm clothing and bedtime attire for kids, was announced, as temperatures dropped and the community rallied in response to a dire situation.
The initiative, launched on November 12, strives to ensure that no child in Cocke County suffers the winter's bite without proper protection. In a post from the Cocke County Emergency Management Agency shared on Facebook, the agency outlined the desperate need for pajamas, coats, and other warmers. The post, dated November 12 at 2:55 pm, carried a poignant message from the Emergency Management Director, revealing a fresh awareness of a persistent issue: "I am concerned about the state of our students as briefed by our Schools Family Resource Directors." The campaign comes to an end on December 12, leaving a narrow window for the community to show its support.
With drop-off locations spread across the county, from the Emergency Operations Center to local fire departments and schools, residents are asked to extend a helping hand while shopping locally or through online purchases directed to the same collection points. The distributed efforts echo the widespread concern for children, some of whom, according to the post, are "going to bed at night without something warm to wear" or arriving at school unprepared for the cold.
Citizens are encouraged to donate new items in all sizes, fitting children and adults, including pajama tops and bottoms, socks, coats, gloves, winter hats, and hand and foot warmers. Emphasized by the blunt dedication of Emergency Management Director J.M. Esway, the campaign symbolizes a county united in action as much as in spirit, "It is my intention to “Lean In” on this campaign so if you see me coming and don’t wannna have a conversation about it, turn and go in another direction." His statement reflects both the urgency of the project and an unwavering dedication to remedying the cold that holds some of Cocke County’s youngest inhabitants in its grasp.
How to help: Those wishing to donate can visit local sites such as The Emergency Operations Center, or utilize online shopping to direct items to the Center’s collection point. The full list of drop-off locations can be found on the aforementioned Facebook post. The campaign, supported by organizations like The She Rises Foundation and School Family Resource Centers, offers a straightforward avenue for the community to embody the warmth they seek to share with their young neighbors.
