San Diego's waterfront became a crossroads of international friendship and maritime tradition as the Colombian Navy’s training ship ARCGloria dropped anchor at Broadway Pier. According to a press release by Fleet Week San Diego, the three-masted barque, which serves both as a training vessel and a floating embassy for Colombia, began its local visit yesterday and will remain open for tours through Sunday, November 9.

With cadets perched upon its towering masts and the Colombian tricolor flag on display, the Gloria made a striking impression against the San Diego skyline. Onlookers, many of whom hailed from the Colombian community, convened, swelling with pride at the sight of their nation’s symbol. Clemencia Carroll, a Colombian American, expressed her sentiments in an interview with CBS8, saying, "This is very amazing. I feel very proud, very happy, very emotional."

The Gloria boasts a history spanning over five decades of diplomatic missions and maritime training. It offers cadets the invaluable opportunity for hands-on practice to complement their theoretical naval training. Midshipman Santiago Vargas highlighted the significance of this experience, telling CBS8, "This is the most important moment during your training, because this is where you get to practice the theory and the knowledge you acquired in the Naval Academy."

Captain Luis Fernando Lara commands a diverse crew of 154 aboard the ship, which includes 22 officers, of whom five are women; 53 non-commissioned officers, and 66 naval cadets, including nine women. The Gloria operates as a testament to the professionalism of Colombia's Navy and to the strength and potential of its future leaders. Visitors to the vessel can expect an immersive experience, greeted by crew members eager to share their seafaring knowledge and Colombian heritage.

During the Gloria's stay, the public has been given free access to explore the vessel and engage with the naval cadets. Visitors can also pay homage to Colombian naval hero Admiral José Padilla through a small but significant sculpture located aboard the ship. The Gloria not only strengthens diplomatic ties with its visits but also deepens mutual understanding through cultural exchange. The visit, including the boarding and exploration of one of the world's most revered tall ships, ends Sunday, after which the Gloria sets sail to continue its journey as Colombia's ambassador on the seas.
