With the onset of shorter days and the active migration period, the Colorado State Patrol is urging motorists to be extra vigilant for wildlife crossing the roads. The warning comes after a series of wildlife-related incidents that plagued one community over the recent weekend.

From November 14 to November 16, troopers were called to respond to a total of 17 wildlife-related incidents within the 1A-Golden Troop area, which spans Clear Creek County and Jefferson County. According to a press release from the Colorado State Patrol, these incidents included multiple vehicle collisions with deer, as well as a collision with an elk. "November is the peak rutting season for many wildlife species, and it is also the peak month for wildlife-related crashes," the CSP stated. In 2024 alone, there were 3,777 vehicle-versus-wildlife crashes, with November having the highest incidence at 530.

The CSP offers advice to help to significantly reduce the risk of these potentially dangerous encounters. Drivers are advised to scan the roads and shoulders for movement or reflective eye shine and to use high beams when no oncoming traffic is present. Motorists should slow or stop for wildlife if it's safe and use hazard lights to alert other cars. Additionally, it's essential to heed the speed limit and to be vigilant for more animals when one is spotted, as they often travel in groups.

In the event of a collision with an animal, authorities urge drivers to call 9-1-1, treating it as any emergency. For cases where wildlife is seen in distress near the road, the CSP advises calling *CSP to ensure that the appropriate resources can be notified and dispatched to the scene. These measures are not only meant to protect the animals but also to help prevent potentially more severe crashes with oncoming traffic or vehicles from behind, which could result in serious injuries or fatalities.
