Tragedy struck in Indiana County when a house fire claimed the lives of two children early yesterday morning. According to the Indiana County Coroner’s Office, a 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy perished in the inferno that erupted in the 900 block of Dilltown Heights Road in Buffington Township. The fire was reported just before 2:30 a.m., and while three other people managed to escape, these two children were sadly trapped inside, their deaths later ruled accidental, as reported by WPXI.
Post-mortem examinations are scheduled, with the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal spearheading the investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The Glen Campbell Jr. Fire Department, which was among the first responders, disclosed on social media that the victims were students in the United School District. The district has since extended its "sincerest condolences and support to the families of these students in these heartbreaking times" and is providing support services to students and staff, reported WPXI.
Family friend Kara Baird, as reported by CBS News, stated, "Sad, your heart just breaks. There are two people lost. There are no words," said Baird. She fondly remembered the girl as "full of life" and noted the boy, Justin Haase, was "a jokester who always made sure everyone was smiling." An online obituary for Justin echoed these sentiments.
The family, according to Baird, did not have a lot of means but provided for their kids as best as they could. Now, in the wake of the tragedy, she is attempting to raise funds for their burial and other immediate needs.
