The crash has since been cleared, but the late-night pileup renews scrutiny on a stretch of roadway that has seen repeated high-speed and multi-vehicle collisions in recent years.
According to WTAE, officials confirmed multiple vehicles crashed outside the tunnel late Sunday night, and the station reported it reached out to officials for further details. The outlet reported the crash blocked all outbound lanes before crews cleared the scene. The Liberty Tunnel is a 5,889-foot passage constructed in 1924.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
Sunday's crash is far from the first serious incident near the tunnel's portals. In March 2026, a fiery three-vehicle crash killed two passengers as a vehicle exited the Liberty Tunnel onto the Liberty Bridge; Allegheny County prosecutors later filed 18 criminal charges, including two counts of homicide by vehicle while DUI, against driver Madison Elizabeth Rau, per the same TribLIVE reporting. Investigators alleged Rau traveled about 90 mph as she exited the tunnel before colliding with another vehicle. The tunnel and adjoining Liberty Bridge are part of the corridor. The corridor's history of major incidents extends back further still: a nine-vehicle pileup inside the tunnel in December 2023 shut down the passage in both directions, stranding motorists for hours and resulting in seven hospitalizations, as reported by WPXI. At least 100 first responders were called to the scene to extricate victims and clear the scene.
Overnight Construction Closures Loom This Week
Sunday's crash comes just as PennDOT District 11 prepares for scheduled overnight closures of the inbound Liberty Tunnel Tuesday through Thursday nights, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., for a $3.47 million portal roof replacement project. Mosites Construction Company is managing the work, which PennDOT says is scheduled for completion in spring 2027. The tunnel had already seen recent traffic disruptions: on September 9 and 10, PennDOT conducted 15-minute intermittent stoppages in both the Fort Pitt and Liberty Tunnels between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to allow crews to finish survey work.
PennDOT's official detour for inbound traffic includes Banksville Road and the Fort Pitt Bridge. The southern exit onto Saw Mill Run Boulevard is also part of that detour.
