In Crowley, Texas, a local police officer, Kwaun Shaw, is facing an urgent health crisis while still donning his uniform to serve his community. Shaw, a man in the throes of stage 5 kidney failure, is fighting for his life even as he continues to fulfill his duties as a law enforcement officer. As he told NBC DFW, “I plug in the machine every night for a 10-hour duration period, and then I unplug every morning before going to work.” It's a harrowing regimen that speaks to Shaw's resilience, and to the silent battles that some of our community's protectors are facing behind the scenes.
On the home front, Shaw is not just an officer, he's a family man - a husband and father to a young son. His wife, Whitney Shaw, reflects on the reality of dialysis as she told WFAA, "Dialysis is just not something you think about when you're in your 30s." But, despite the challenges that dialysis presents, Whitney acknowledges its critical role in keeping her husband alive and with their family.
The police officer’s dedication to the job amidst personal health struggles is evidently not lost on his peers. The Crowley fire department and local officials have rallied behind Shaw in a collective show of support, emphasizing the taxing nature of dialysis treatment that Shaw endures, reminiscent of the dedication he holds for his community. As the fire department emphasized in a social media post obtained by WFAA, "Despite all of this, Officer Shaw continues to put his life on the line for our community."
