Wednesday afternoon in Fort Worth turned deadly when a man was shot outside a home and died at the scene, authorities said. Officers were called around 2 p.m. for reports of gunfire and found an adult man with gunshot wounds to his torso. Medical crews tried lifesaving measures, but police said the victim was pronounced dead outside the residence.
Homicide detectives quickly locked down the area. Investigators stayed on scene into the afternoon, speaking with neighbors and anyone who might have seen or heard what happened.
Police say a confrontation came first
Investigators believe the violence started with an argument. The shooting followed an “altercation” between the victim and a group of people outside the home, according to WFAA. The station reports that police are treating the case as a homicide and are canvassing the surrounding blocks for witnesses and any available video.
As of Wednesday, officials had not released any suspect descriptions or other identifying information about those involved.
Part of a troubling pattern this year
The killing fits into a string of Fort Worth cases where arguments or fights have escalated into deadly gunfire. In June, officers found a man shot to death in a backyard after what police described as an argument that led to a shooting, according to reporting by The Dallas Morning News. A separate July incident left another man dead after a fight was broken up and gunfire followed.
In each of those investigations, as in Wednesday’s shooting, detectives have leaned on witness statements and surveillance footage while they work to identify suspects. Police officials repeatedly urge residents to review doorbell cameras and dash-cam recordings and to share anything that might help fill in the gaps.
What the police are asking from the public
Detectives are still piecing together what led up to the deadly confrontation outside the home. Anyone with information about Wednesday’s shooting is urged to contact the Fort Worth Police Department’s homicide unit or Tarrant County Crime Stoppers, WFAA reported.
Police say the investigation remains active and that more details will be released when appropriate, as officers continue canvassing the neighborhood and tracking down leads.
