Arizona's healthcare landscape is set for new leadership as Governor Katie Hobbs announces the appointment of Debbie Johnston to head the Department of Health Services. Johnston, bringing over two decades of experience from her tenure at the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA), is known for her work in policy development and regulatory affairs. Her previous efforts have included serving on several public health boards and the Arizona Health Improvement Plan Steering Committee.
"Debbie’s longstanding relationships, strong leadership, and extensive experience with Arizona health care providers, especially our rural hospitals, will be assets to Arizonans and to the hundreds of thousands health care providers that ADHS licenses," Governor Hobbs stated in an announcement. Johnston is to take the reins following the former interim Director Sheila Sjolander, who is slated to return to her previous position within the agency after serving since April 2025.
Johnston's nomination is a nod to her commendable track record as well as her in-depth understanding of the state's healthcare needs. "An accessible and efficient public healthcare system is vital to the prosperity of our state," Johnston told the Office of the Arizona Governor. She will now embark on her mission to ensure the safety of the public, supporting the persistent work of Arizona's healthcare providers.
With her roots firmly planted in Arizona soil as a third-generation Arizonan, Johnston isn’t new to the intricacies of state governance. Her initial journey through the corridors of the Arizona State Senate as a Research Analyst laid the groundwork for what would become a distinguished career of public service. Now, all eyes are on the State Senate as they prepare for Johnston’s confirmation, setting the stage for her to steer Arizona's health services into its next chapter.
