
An 11-year-old girl was seriously injured on Monday afternoon after being struck by a 2019 Nissan Rogue while trying to cross Lake Mead Boulevard in east Las Vegas. She was taken to University Medical Center and remains in serious condition.
The crash occurred in heavy traffic just east of Peaceful Spirit Lane shortly before 4:40 p.m., as reported by FOX5 Las Vegas. The driver stayed at the scene, was not impaired, and told police that they braked and swerved but could not avoid hitting the girl.
What police said
In a statement reproduced by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Metropolitan Police Department said the child was crossing southbound across Lake Mead outside a marked crosswalk in heavy traffic. Detectives are still working to determine the precise sequence of events.
Local safety push
Regional agencies have been testing technology and planning engineering fixes aimed at reducing pedestrian crashes, including pilot programs for pedestrian-detection sensors and intersection analytics, according to the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. Nationally, the U.S. Department of Transportation is promoting a “Safe System” approach that pairs engineering, enforcement, and education to better protect people walking and biking, as per the USDOT.
